Detroit Alumni Chapter Review June 2018

By Richard C. Clement - VP Detroit Alumni Chapter
Dr. Wanda Whitten Shurney

The year has been a bright one for the chapter starting with a successful Founders Day luncheon and awards ceremony held. Dr. Wanda Witten Shurney gave a very educational presentation on Sickle Cell Anemia and what to do about it. She gave out a lot of information for attendees to review at their leisure.

Midwest Regional Officers

The next bright spot was attending the Midwest Regional Conference were I was so honored to march with my fellow Marching Hornets.

Cromwell Handy,  Erick Wright, Richard Clement

Currently serving as the national president Erick Wright did a masterful presentation on how the Alumni Association will stay in contact with each other,  recruit new students, and support current students.

We also want send a big shout out to our recent graduates of Alabama State University.  Rashad Vann is working for a TV station in Nebraska. He and any other 2018 ASU graduate in the Detroit Area will have their membership fees waived for one year.

If you attended ASU but did not graduate from ASU. You are eligible for an associate membership in the chapter. This is a direct invite for Daniel Campbell who has been an ally in the fight for working people as a member of the UAW.  I was so honored to protest with him at an anti-racism rally in Detroit.  The chapter wants to send a shout out to Ms. Flora Vann for her leadership as past President of the chapter and, a special shout out from me for the 2016 Hyundai Accent from Enterprise Car Rental.  You cannot beat 40.0 miles per gallon on the highway!

ASU Midwest Region

With the election of new officers and an increase in membership, the chapter will carry on the vision of improving the quality of life through education and networking.

Alabama State University National Alumni Association 2018 Membership Drive .

Greetings from the ASU/NAA President's Office

I am making a personal appeal to  Alabama State University Alumni to join the National Alumni Association during this campaign for membership.

Shea Stadium 1968
The Alabama State University National Alumni Association has elected a new President, who is a former Marching Hornet, Mr. Erick Wright from Birmingham, Alabama and now resides in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Wright is a former student of Mr. Edward Crenshaw, Director of Bands at Ramsey Senior High School. Mr. Wright was a Drum Major as a Marching Hornet, like his Director, Mr. Crenshaw.

There are three ways in which one can become member of National Alumni Association;
1. Virtual Chapter Membership ( $53.00 ) - Virtual Chapter Membership $50 (includes 6% service charge).  If you were a student at Alabama State University at some point and did not complete your degree, you may consider joining as a Virtual Chapter Member.

2. Chapter Membership (www.alasu.edu) - Annual Membership Dues for each chapter is stipulated at Alabama State University website.

3. The ASUNAA Life Membership is available to alumni members who contribute $1,000. Fully paid members will receive a life membership pin and plaque when the full payment is rendered. Another option is to make three yearly installments: $333.33, $333.33, $333.34. Life membership excludes the member from paying national dues for life. Local dues must continue to be paid.

2018 Early Membership Drive
Membership Committee Chairman
and President Elect, Mr. Erick Wright

The Alabama State University National Alumni Association, Inc. (ASUNAA) is launching a “2018 Early Membership Drive”. The first 200 new alumni who sign up will receive an NAA gift.

“Membership growth is essential within the ASUNAA and a strong alumni base that engages in alumni activities as a true stakeholder greatly enhances the relationship with Alabama State University,” says President, Erick Wright.   Now a ASUNAA 2018 Early Membership Drive-Recruit and Re-claim  members has begun.
This early membership drive is focusing on the foundational member base local chapters. However, the focus is also geared towards the virtual member concept (none-chapter affiliation):
  • To keep pace with the electronic-age and computer savvy alumni by providing options for alumni to be active with the NAA.
  • Data indicates that alumni want to be active members, but have little time to attend traditional chapter meetings.

“The ASUNAA hopes through active engagement alumni can support and network with alumni across Hornet Nation.”
To become a member, visit the ASU website at www.alasu.edu; click Alumni; click Join the Alumni; click options for virtual or regular chapter member; complete the online membership form with payment and click the submit button.

Personal checks, money orders or cashier checks are acceptable and should be made out to ASUNAA and mailed to:

NATIONAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION, INC.

Post Office Box 6078

Montgomery, Alabama 36106

Please join the ASUNAA in supporting and defending the legacy and tradition of Alabama State University. Reach out to other ASU alumni within your circle and ask them to you join you in becoming an ASUNAA member.

The new 2018-2020 term will start off with our annual Founders Day Luncheon on Saturday,  February 17, 2018 at Karas House Banquet Hall in Redford, MI starting at 11:30am. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Wanda Shurney, CEO - Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. The cost of admission is a $40 ticket with the proceeds going towards Scholarships for Detroit Area students attending Alabama State University. As one of our past chapter presidents Mrs. Edna Adell would say, "Reach One, Teach One" and the importance of paying it forward.

Sickle Cell Disease affects nearly 100,000 Americans. Although it can strike all ethnicities, the great majority of Sickle Cell Disease patients are of African-American or Hispanic origin. The disease is inherited and is caused by a mutated gene that triggers the production of abnormal red blood cells. Patients with Sickle Cell Disease often struggle with lifelong anemia, severe pain and shortened life spans.

We want to thank the previous administration under the leadership of Past President Mrs. Flora Vann who has done a wonderful job in managing the chapter. In December 2017 an election was held and new leadership was put into place.
