SPRING INTO FASHION

"The Equinox"
Alabama State University - Montgomery Alabama
NEW members, CURRENT members, FORMER members, FUTURE members and supporters of the Alabama State University Detroit Alumni Chapter, this year our
Alma Mater is 150 years old (1867-2017). We are celebrating the sesquicentennial of our rich and inspiring history of our university. We honor the founders’ who were former slaves, known as the “Marion Nine.”  With years of perseverance, progress, promise, and commitment the Detroit Alumni Chapter hosts its annual Founders’ Day Observance and Scholarship Fundraiser Luncheon.
In addition, with this year’s scholarship fundraiser, we are featuring a dazzling fashion show. Our chapter has done well; however, there is much more to be done.

We are moving onward and upward not only supporting ASU, but supporting our students in the metro Detroit area and generations to come. Come and dine in memory of the “Marion Nine;” and spring into fashion with ASU Detroit Alumni. The Detroit Chapter is asking for your support; join us as Alumni Stand United for the betterment of students who attends Alabama State University. I believe we can do this and with your help, I know we can.

Sincerely,
Chundra Jones

Detroit Chapter History

History of the Detroit Alumni Chapter

The Detroit Chapter was the first to be organized as an alumni chapter of the Alabama State University, during the latter part of the 1940s.  The need was great at this time, for those who had been fortunate enough to attend or graduate from the University to band together.  This effort was to ensure that no young person desirous of developing or expanding his/her scholastic skills would be turned away due to lack of funds.

During and immediately after World War II many Blacks migrated to the north from the south in search of better economic opportunities.  Many who migrated were teachers from the historic Alabama State University.

By word of mouth, a few determined and courageous Alabama State University graduates spread the news rapidly that an alumni chapter was to be started in Detroit.  After the birth of the Detroit Chapter, surrounding states and states all over the country began forming alumni chapters.  Today, we are indeed proud of the accomplishments being made by all the chapters.  These chapters makes up our illustrious National Alumni Association of the Alabama State University.
